APIA Leichhardt Tigers FC Women's

Round 21 delivered a brilliant final home game featuring the Italian Derby against long time rivals Marconi Stallions FC. With so much still to play for across all our grades, our girls got the job done taking three great wins and a draw from the five played. And the day ended with the entire club celebrating our club championship win in fine style, mid pitch, after 1st Grades big win. The Italian Derby never disappoints, always a tough match against the stallions and this time was no different. 1st Grade got off to a great start, thanks to Ash Palombi's 2nd minute goal which put the Stallions on the back foot. It tightened up after that but our girls dominated this match and although Marconi had several chances, three more goals ensured another great win as they are now one point from securing the Premiership. This match was highlighted by our 17s player Lilly Dummett's sensational first goal at this level, much to the delight of her 17s coach Robbie Maiorana. It was the 4th and final goal as our ladies took a fantastic final home game victory. The Reserve's didn't fare so well. They suffered just their 4th loss of the season, in what was a tough match for them. Having conceded early, they bounced back thanks to Marissa Papoulidis's solo effort. But he joy was short lived as the Stallions pilled on four more goals to take the match away from us. The girls did peg one back thanks to a Dione King penalty, but it just wasn't to be this time around. They still have a chance of securing the Premiership, but now rely on Nepean's result next Sunday. The 17s had their best win of the season, beating the top placed side in a sensational team effort which was highlighted by Therese Bechara's two 2nd half goals. Needing to win to keep their premiership hopes alive, they did just that as they put away the top ranked side with a great team performance. The 15s needed to win to keep their finals hopes alive and they didn't let this match slip by this time. Having had little luck in previous weeks, it finally turned with Caitlin Stringers fine solo effort giving her team the lead and ultimately an important win. They are playing well and have kept their season alive....just! Our 14s started the day with a gutsy draw. They too are playing well, but were unable to find a goal in this match as both teams came close on several occasions. With a finals berth secured, they now have a chance to take 2nd spot on the ladder depending on results this weekend. Either way, they've had a great season. During 1st Grades half time break, all our girls was presented with a commemorative club champions t-shirt by our club President Jim Apostolovski, and it was great to see the Board of directors joined by all our sponsors for a special function during our seniors match, and we thank them for their continued support and attendance. And so the day ended with wild celebrations at the conclusion of 1st Grade's big win, as we celebrated our 2019 Club Championship win........FORZA APIA! 🏆
