VIAREGGIO A NO GO IN 2017 FOR APIA.
The Club wishes to officially announce for the first time in 15 years the Club's Under 20 Youth Team will not be participating in the prestigious Viareggio Youth Football Tournament.
Viareggio is undoubtedly the most prestigious Youth Club Tournament in the world, and due to the poor scheduling in mid - March until the end of March , 2017 scheduled tournament dates, this period is NO longer a viable option for the Club to participate, for many significant reasons. As most of you are aware, the NSW Premier League season commences approximately in mid March, and the Clubs participation could and possibly would involve the postponing of up to 4 competition matches for both the Under 18's and Under 20's. This decision was NOT taken lightly but in the best interests of players missing out on School, University and Competition matches.
There is no doubt that Football NSW and the FFA would have granted permission and approval to the Club to participate in this world class FIFA sanctioned tournament, and for this we are grateful and thankful to both Football NSW and the FFA. But the reality is participation at Viareggio would severely impact on the Club's performances with our NSW Premier League Under 18's and Under 20's squad. Not to mention the fact it would also disrupt our opposition Clubs, and although in past years all opposition Clubs have been accommodating and obliging, it would be unreasonable from our Club to seek so many postponements. This decision by the Club's Board was a very difficult one, but it is a very responsible one. Viareggio for the most part has been held in late January to mid February every year providing perfect timing for Pre-season preparation.
The club is currently looking into alternate options and remain hopeful of finding a custom tour to fill the massive void of Viareggio.
