Women’s’ Super League newcomers, A.P.I.A.-Leichhardt Tigers, have announced the signing of former Marconi and NWS Koalas star Alicia Cavanagh to Captain the club in its debut WSL season.
A.P.I.A.-’s Head Coach, Tarek Madani and A.P.I.A.- Secretary, John Mellino welcomed Cavanagh to the club with she put pen to paper at Western Suburbs Leagues Club Ashfield on Friday afternoon.
It’s a major move for the player who captained NWS Koalas into the 2008 WPL Grand Final but Cavanagh says she is looking forward to the challenge of a new club. Cavanagh said that she felt that she had achieved as much as she could as a player with NWS Koalas but spoke glowingly of the Koalas coaching staff and administration. “I certainly wish Koalas all the best. They are a very professional club and have wished me well in my future,” said Cavanagh.
Cavanagh said that she had been flattered by the respect and interest A.P.I.A.- had shown in her. She is certainly motivated to deliver her best for her new club.
“A.P.I.A.- are bringing a new standard of professionalism to the game. I’ve been very impressed by what they have planned, including a proposed junior academy for girls which they would like me to play a major role in establishing. A.P.I.A.- have a big reputation and our girls/women’s teams will be working hard to live up to the club’s expectations,” stated Cavanagh.
“The club are putting together a quality first grade squad. We will be building on that quality throughout the ranks. We envisage a strong first grade squad attracting talented players in the future. Our expectations for the 2009 season are realistic but A.P.I.A.- have a three year plan aimed towards promotion to the WPL. It’s great to see such vision in a club. A.P.I.A.- wants to be a powerhouse in women’s football,” said an obviously excited Cavanagh.
Head Coach Tarek Madani was thrilled to have Cavanagh on board for what promises to be a testing first season for The Tigers. Madani has promised more big name signings in the coming months. It looks like A.P.I.A.- mean business when the 2009 WSL season commences. -By Ross Anderson |
